Nepal has officially asked Russia to stop recruiting its citizens into the military. This request comes after the sad news that six Nepali soldiers, known as Gurkhas, lost their lives while serving in the Russian army during the war in Ukraine. Gurkhas, well-known for their bravery and combat skills, have a history of serving in the British and Indian armies, but Nepal doesn’t have a similar agreement with Russia.
The Nepalese government released a formal statement, asking Moscow to quickly bring back the bodies of the fallen soldiers and provide compensation to their families. At the same time, diplomatic efforts are underway to free a Nepali citizen currently held in captivity in Ukraine.
Milan Raj Tuladhar, Nepal’s ambassador in Moscow, stated that around 150-200 Nepalis might be working as mercenaries in the Russian military.
