Despite Iceland’s status as a leader in gender equality, women still earn 21% less than men in some professions. In addition, more than 40% of women face gender inequality or sexual violence.
The last time such an event was held was in 1975 – then 90% of women in the country refused to work as part of the “kvennafrí” (women’s day off) action. This protest completely paralyzed the country, demonstrating the importance of women’s participation in all economic processes and leading to significant changes, including the selection of the world’s first female president.
